Educational Objectives:

As a result of attending these sessions, participants should be able to:
  • Use axillary ultrasound for pre-op axillary staging for patients with breast cancer.
  • Identify patients who are candidates for MRI screening for breast cancer.
  • Apply new imaging technologies for patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer.
  • Apply criteria to determine which patients are appropriate candidates for sentinel node biopsy.
  • Identify patients who are candidates for neo adjuvant therapy.
  • Integrate oncoplastic breast surgery principles into clinical practice.
  • Differentiate between patients who are and are not candidates for nipple sparing mastectomy.
  • Identify key timing for surgical interventions in pregnant patients.
  • Discuss the impact of missed surgical conditions in pregnant patients.
  • Appropriately position and monitor the pregnant patient during surgery.
  • Recognize which patients are candidates for nonsurgical treatment as a temporizing measure for surgical conditions.
  • Recognize the characteristics that differentiate a phyllodes tumor from a fibroadenoma with respect to diagnosis and management.
  • Outline the diagnosis and treatment management algorithm of nipple discharge.
  • Recognize differences and management of lactational and nonlactational breast abscesses.
  • Identify patients who are candidates for prophylactic surgery.
  • Identify which patients are candidates for nutritional support.
  • Apply principles of nutritional monitoring to patients' care.
  • Identify early renal dysfunction and apply management principles to obviate the need for dialysis.

  • Identify the role of laparoscopic inguinal herniorrhaphy in clinical practice.
  • Apply the principles of surgical technique to salvage difficult groin hernia dissections.
  • Apply sound surgical practice to the diabetic foot.

  • Integrate a multidisciplinary approach to the diabetic extremity.

  • Incorporate the use of a management algorithm for acute limb ischemia when vascular surgical expertise is not available.
  • Apply management principles for care of the ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Purpose Statement:
The purpose of this activity is to enhance physicians' competence in the ACGME/ABMS competency areas. This activity includes an update on the recent advances made in the clinical and surgical management of the most common problems seen in the practice general surgery.
Target Audience:
This course is designed for the practicing general surgeon, other surgeons, and those interested in general surgery.
Educational Format:
The format for this course consists of 45-minute lectures, each followed by a 15-minute question and answer period in which participants will also be encouraged to discuss with faculty potential barriers to implementation of new practice strategies. There will be a panel discussion of a case each day. The sessions are designed to facilitate exchange of information and dialogue between presenting faculty and participants.
