Educational Objectives:

After attending these sessions, participants should be able to:
  • Identify societal causes of the obesity epidemic.
  • Evaluate and manage the overweight child and adolescent and make appropriate referrals for significant comorbidities.
  • Describe the various causes for small stature.
  • Evaluate, manage and/or make appropriate referrals for the child or adolescent with growth failure.
  • Describe the normal variations of puberty (premature thelarche and pubarche).
  • Diagnose and manage the child with benign premature thelarche and pubarche and make appropriate referrals for the child with true precocious puberty.
  • Describe the essential principles of motivational interviewing.
  • Use effective communication skills (open-ended questions and reflective listening) to help families find the motivation to adopt healthier lifestyles.
  • Effectively diagnose and manage atopic dermatitis.
  • Evaluate and manage pediatric and adolescent acne.
  • Identify and treat common skin infestations and infections.
  • Evaluate birthmarks and determine whether diagnostic work is needed.
  • Evaluate and manage pediatric hypertension with an understanding of the common etiologies.
  • Evaluate hematuria in the office setting.
  • Evaluate proteinuria in the office setting.
  • Discuss opposing views regarding diagnostic and treatment strategies for urinary tract infections in children.
  • Use the pathophysiology of innocent versus pathologic heart murmurs in children to distinguish between them with physical diagnosis.
  • Recognize, diagnose, and stabilize the newborn with congenital heart disease.
  • Perform a pre-participation sports physical exam.
  • Recognize patients at risk for sudden cardiac death.
  • Interpret the pediatric electrocardiogram with regard to cardiac rhythm.
  • Diagnose pediatric dysrhythmias.
  • Discuss the principles of the management of common pediatric dysrhythmias

Purpose Statement:
This activity will provide a comprehensive update and review on current issues and contemporary topics in pediatrics. Emphasis will be placed on the recent advances made in the clinical management of the most common disorders seen in pediatric practice.
Target Audience:
This course is designed for pediatricians, other primary care physicians and those interested in pediatrics.
