Educational Objectives:

As a result of attending this session participants should be able to:
  • Use computerized testing to evaluate concussion.
  • Make sound decisions regarding the young athlete's return to play following an upper
    body injury.
  • Make sound decisions regarding the young athlete's return to play following a lower
    body injury.
  • Determine a child's developmental readiness for participation in sports.
  • Effectively coach patients in the monitoring and self-management of asthma.
  • Evaluate and manage the child with chronic cough.
  • Manage complications of sickle cell disease.
  • Apply the IDSA/ATS guidelines in the diagnosis and management of pneumonia.
  • Identify the clinical features and presentation of autism spectrum disorders
  • Discuss the biologic basis for autism
  • Screen for autism spectrum disorders in the medical home.
  • Refer for children with autism spectrum disorders for early intervention.
  • Use evidence-based data to educate families of children who have autism spectrum disorders.
  • Identify symptoms of sleep disorders in infants, children, and adolescents.
  • Provide anticipatory guidance regarding sleep to parents at well child checks.
  • Carry out a medical evaluation for patients who have sleep disorders.
  • Manage behavioral sleep disorders.
  • Identify the clinical features and presentation of intellectual disability in youth.
  • Discuss common etiologies of intellectual disability.
  • Initiate a screening and diagnostic evaluation on a timely basis.
  • Identify therapeutic options for patients who have intellectual disability.
  • Plan the behavioral evaluation of youth who have behavioral problems.
  • Use the differential diagnosis for patients whose symptoms are suggestive of ADHD.
  • Identify the clinical features and presentation of learning disabilities
  • Discuss the multi-factorial nature of school-related difficulties.
  • Evaluate and manage constipation in children.
  • Develop a testing strategy for the evaluation of chronic diarrhea in children.
  • Implement diagnostic and treatment options for gastro-esophageal reflux in children.
  • Identify gastrointestinal manifestations of food allergies.

Purpose Statement:
The purpose of this activity is to enhance physicians' competence in the ACGME/ABMS competency areas. This activity includes an update on the recent advances made in the clinical management of the most common disorders seen in the practice of pediatric medicine.
Target Audience:
This course is designed for pediatricians, other primary care physicians and those interested in pediatrics.
Educational Format:
The format for this course consists of 45-minute lectures, each followed by a 15-minute question and answer period in which participants will also be encouraged to discuss with faculty potential barriers to implementation of new practice strategies. The sessions are designed to facilitate exchange of information and dialogue between presenting faculty and participants.
