| Purpose
Statement: |
| The
purpose of this activity is to enhance physicians'
competence in the ACGME/ABMS competency areas.
This activity includes an update on the recent
advances made in the clinical management of
the most common infectious diseases seen in
the practice of pediatric medicine. |
| Target
Audience: |
| This
course is designed for the practicing pediatrician,
pediatric infectious disease specialists, family
practitioners and other primary care physicians. |
| Educational
Format: |
| The
format for this course consists of 45-minute
lectures, each followed by a 15-minute question
and answer period in which participants will
also be encouraged to discuss with faculty potential
barriers to implementation of new practice strategies.
The sessions are designed to facilitate exchange
of information and dialogue between presenting
faculty and participants. |

Educational
Objectives:
As
a result of attending this session participants
should be able to: |
- Incorporate
best evidence into their patient care.
- Apply
the differential diagnosis to perinatal
and congenital nursery infections.
- Use
current "Redbook" updates and
recent journal articles to improve clinical
skills and patient outcomes.
- Select
the appropriate antibiotic for a given condition.
- Use
counseling skills to improve vaccination
success.
- Use
new information regarding vaccination changes
to improve patient outcomes.
- Include
emerging and re-emerging infections in the
differential diagnosis of presenting illness.
- Evaluate
and manage infectious diarrhea.
- Implement
an effective approach to evaluation of a
child with recurrent fevers, and/or FUO.
- Evaluate
and manage musculoskeletal infections.
- Evaluate
and manage acute and subacute, chronic cervical
and generalized adenopathy.
- Implement
current guidelines regarding the evaluation
and care of foreign adoptees and families
who travel internationally.
- Given
a case history and presenting symptoms use
the differential diagnosis to identify infectious
diseases.
- Apply
the latest information available on CA-MRSA
to clinical patient management.
