Educational Purpose:
The purpose of this activity is to enhance physicians' competence in the ACGME/ABMS competency areas. This activity includes an update on the recent advances made in the clinical management of the most common infectious diseases seen in the practice of pediatric medicine.
Target Audience:
This course is designed for the practicing pediatrician, pediatric infectious disease specialists, family practitioners and other primary care physicians.
Educational Format:
The format for this course consists of 45-minute lectures, each followed by a 15-minute question and answer period in which participants will also be encouraged to discuss with faculty potential barriers to implementation of new practice strategies. The sessions are designed to facilitate exchange of information and dialogue between presenting faculty and participants.

Educational Objectives:

As a result of attending these sessions, participants should be able to use current clinical recommendations, based on best evidence, to more competently:
  • Incorporate best evidence into the management of patients presenting with flu-like Given a case history and presenting symptoms use the differential diagnosis to identify infectious diseases.
  • Make sound decisions regarding the efficient use of vaccines.
  • Differentiate between bronchiolitis, croup, and bacterial tracheitis and select the appropriate treatment.
  • Implement effective management strategies for otitis media, pharyngitis and sinusitis.
  • Include emerging and re-emerging infections in the differential diagnosis of presenting illness.
  • Diagnose, manage and treat pneumococcus infections.
  • Use current "Redbook" updates and recent journal articles to improve clinical skills and patient outcomes.
  • Diagnose, manage, and treat bacterial pneumonias in children to include bronchiectasis and aspiration lung disease including the disabled child and the child with cystic fibrosis.
  • Differentiate between herpes viruses and select the appropriate treatment.
  • Identify and manage infections associated with group childcare.
  • Identify and manage genital infections.
  • Discuss impacting pediatric infectious diseases literature from the past year.
